The REAL Sarah Palin: Religious fanatic, liar

After yesterday’s “rousing” speech in which she appealed to “hockey moms” and by extension “soccer moms,” the claims vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin have been vetted, not only by DNC members, but by Alaskan newspapers and other nationals publications. The results are in: Sarah Palin is a liar, a religious fanatic and has been known to abuse her power.

Sarah Palin: The Liar

Last night, I documented some of the lies I knew without researching that Palin made in her speech to the RNC. This morning, the Anchorage Daily News did a great job of detailing the lies I didn’t catch:

  1. Gas Pipeline – Palin claimed that construction has begun on the “largest private-sector enterprise project in U.S. history.” The paper refutes that claim saying that construction hasn’t begun and that the state hasn’t even received federal authorization to begin the project
  2. Earmarks – Palin claimed to be a champion in the fight against wasteful spending and earmarks. The ADN reported that “As mayor of Wasilla, Palin hired a lobbyist and traveled to Washington annually to support earmarks for the town totaling $27 million.

In her two years as governor, Alaska has requested nearly $750 million in special federal spending, by far the largest per-capita request in the nation, although she has cut, by more than half, the amount the state sought from Washington this year. While Palin notes she rejected plans to build a $398 million bridge from Ketchikan to Gravina Island, that opposition came only after the plan was ridiculed nationally as a “bridge to nowhere.”

Sarah Palin: Religious fanatic

These two facts are already widely known:

  1. Palin supports abstinence-only sexual education programs. Sure, it’s best to believe that abstinence is the way to go if teenagers want to be 100 percent sure that they won’t have a baby. However, as Palin’s own daughter shows, teaching abstinence and preaching abstinence is not always effective. Studies show that abstinence-only programs are complete failures when it comes to keeping kids from having sex.
  2. Palin believes creationism should be taught in public schools. However, she did not push for this agenda as governor of Alaska because she had other things on her agenda… or so she says.
  3. This past June, Palin echoed some of the same sentiments President Bush let slip shortly after 9/11… that the war in Iraq is “God’s war.” Speaking before a Pentacostal church, Palin said, “Pray for our military men and women who are striving to do what is right. Also, for this country, that our leaders, our national leaders, are sending [U.S. soldiers] out on a task that is from God.” It looks like her pastor and Barack Obama’s pastor could have a good shouting match about who says more controversial things. (Palin now belongs to a branch of Christianity known as post-demoninational…)

She abuses her power

  1. She fired former Alaska State Trooper Commisioner Walt Monegan after he refused to fire Palin’s ex-brother-in-law. Palin is under investigation by Alaska’s ethics commission after the trooper union complained.
  2. Palin fired the town librarian after the librarian refused to censor books Palin found objectionable.

Overall, these are just a few tidbits of information I’ve seen in the last few days about Sarah Palin. The only thing clean about her is her hair. She is definitely not qualified to be president of the United States, and after reading these things about her, I question whether she should have been qualified to be mayor of Wasilla.
